H is for Hat
The tall witches hat block is 7" wide by 15" tall, plus 1/4" SA.
DIRECTIONS:
Select fabrics and press. You need: main background, the main part of the hat, the 2 smaller hat pieces in the brim, (#2 and #4), the hatband, and a 2" Perfect Circle that goes on the brim.
Cut out the background piece allowing for at least an extra inch on all 4 sides. Using your light source and a fabric marker whose marks will disappear, mark where pieces 1-4 and the word "Hat" go.
The main hat piece, #1, is first. Cut it out adding the SA, baste it onto the background, and appliqué, keeping in mind the lower edge will be hidden under the band.
Next is piece #2, cut out with SA, baste, and appliqué into place. Refer to the pattern to keep in mind where the edges of this piece show, and the other edges that are concealed by pieces #3 and 4.
The hatband #3 is next. Cut out with SA, baste and appliqué.
#4 is next. Cut out with SA, baste and appliqué. Take care at the place where the point of #4 meets piece #2.
The last appliquéd piece is round #5, that goes on the brim as a decoration. (A button can be added later.) Using the 2" Perfect Circle template, or a notion of your choice, make a 2-inch circle, baste it onto the block using the pattern for positioning, and appliqué.
Embroidery last. The spider hanging on the hat has a satin-stitched body, with the hanging web and word "Hat" done using the "video stitch".
Press the finished block. Depending on your marker of choice you may need to re-mark the outside edge of the 7" by 15" format. Resist cutting it out until you are ready to assemble the whole quilt...you may need a smidgen more!
